“In the 1950’s, 60’s and 70’s there was a private school called Rhodes, located at 11 West 54th (between 5th and 6th). I attended there from 1968 to 1974 - 8th through 12th grades. The school had no lunch facilities so we had to go out to eat - and we’d often go over to the food carts that were located on 53rd near the Hilton Hotel. That was prime “Moondog” territory and we’d hang around there many days eating lunch on the steps of the ABC building and talking with Moondog. He didn’t share many details about his personal life (though we did learn about his apartment uptown and his musical interests). He often wanted to talk more about current events and what we were studying in school. So there we were - Moondog and a bunch of kids in classic “prep school” blazers. People walking by used to give us some odd looks but we didn’t care - we knew him as a friend and a good guy.””
